Social media, manufactured fear, and how race is mobilised.

On our screens and in public life

Most of us get along in real life, yet online the same country can feel deeply divided. The screen does not just host the argument — it helps build it. This session traces how fear moves from speeches and politics to our phones, how small issues are amplified into national crises, and how algorithms reward the versions that make us angriest. The aim is not to attack any party, but to expose the machinery behind outrage: who creates it, who amplifies it, and who benefits from division. It ends with one question for everyone holding a phone: what are you passing on?

When poverty and stereotype get a race.

Money, blame, and the burden one person puts on a whole community

Two assumptions shape Malaysian economic life in opposite ways: that poverty belongs to one race, and wealth to another. Hardship is blamed on other communities, while wealth is tied to stereotypes about privilege, connections and influence. Both reduce people to a “type” before they are judged as individuals. This session examines how those assumptions affect hiring, credit, contracts and trust, and asks what a fairer economy looks like when people are judged on merit, not race.

No law tells Malaysians where to live, yet residential patterns increasingly separate us by race, faith and background. The cost is felt most by the young, who grow up with fewer everyday chances to know people different from themselves. Reverts often understand this distance personally, building belonging across difference in their own homes and streets. This session explores what residential self-sorting is costing us, how real connection can still be built, and what developers, councils and community leaders can do to make neighbourhoods places where unity grows naturally.
